Lite Jazz

After screwing up at work and feeling generally insecure (why have these schools not called me, showering me with money and praise??), I was really not feeling up to getting dressed and going to a concert.

But after a nap and 2 donuts, I was more open to suggestion. Pulled on a sweater and headed out to the bus. Which almost never came. To the point I was hallucinating buses on the horizon. Finally caught the #8 to the theatre, grabbed my ticket and seat.

Steppenwolf is hosting Traffic Jam, which is a 3 week series of concerts of different genres. Last night was John Pizzarelli, who recently released an album called "Dear Mr. Sinatra." So the 4 piece group (piano, guitar, standing bass, drum kit) played the standards with a lot of "improvising". It struck me as pretty formulaic, lacking alot of real interpretation. But the old fogies LOVED it. They laughed at all his jokes, clapped at random stuff. Not exactly a panty-flinging frenzy, fortunately.

My favorite part was probably "I Like Jersey Best" when he did an uncanny impression of Billie Holliday.

But hey, it was culture. I got a comp ticket. And I discovered that I live within walking distance of Steppenwolf. Now if only they would do some shows I actually want to see. Or better, hire me!
