It's getting hot in here

Overall, it's been a pretty tame summer. Not outrageously hot/humid. Regular June afternoon storms. But this past week has been extra toasty. Like I have had the AC running non-stop for about 4 days, which for me, is unusual because I am an AC miser. (I try to turn it off over night or when I'm at work).

Smokin' Fairy prides himself on living without AC. And while I have done it (3 years in the unACed dorms in swampy Williamsburg will test the patience and deodorant of the best), the fact that I have it is mighty nice.

Yesterday, I tried reading outside in the sun, but barely lasted 30 minutes before I felt like I was melting into a puddle of sweat. It's been so hot, it's hard to get inspired to do much but lounge on the couch and pull chilly pillowcases out of the freezer. (I once babysat 2 girls who liked to put their nighties in the freezer, which seems a bit hardcore for me, but the pillowcase can be nice). And it's so hot even the animals are lazy. Catface has her spot under the neighbor's truck. Bud just pants like crazy, usually in the general direction of whatever you are eating. And Crazy squirrel, who is way to tame to be a squirrel, and who kinda freaks out Lil Sis, has taken to draping himself (herself?) over the wooden rail of the apartment building, pressing his/her butt up against the wall.

It reminds me of the squirrels who would spontaneously flatten themselves on the white pebbly pavement on Capitol Hill during the July that I worked up there. It looked like they were hit by imaginary cars.

I'm waiting for a storm to come through and cool things off at least a little bit. Or at least enough that a walk to the library or Donkey does not instantly necessitate a shower.
